The Inspiration

Changing History to HERstory

We live in a world predominantly shaped by men, so for International Women's Day 2021, Kat Shaw decided to look back over history and change it to HERstory, choosing both the sung and unsung heroines, boundary-pushers and pioneers who inspired her with their actions and their words.

Her exhibition honoured 57 magnificent women who have shaped the way the world is today - including many whose efforts went unnoticed in their own lifetimes.

Thanks to Covid restrictions, this in-person exhibition became an online sensation! You can read more about it here.

Due to its immediate popularity, it quickly became a book...

Herstory launch with Trista Hendren of Girl God Books

The Herstory book to accompany the exhibition was published by Girl God Books.

Golden Warriors

In October 2020, Kat Shaw wanted to use her art to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The result? The Golden Warriors project, featuring portraits of 15 women who had all been touched by breast cancer.

Working with breast cancer charities Wigs for Heroes and Copafeel, Kat made her paintings into a calendar. 100% of the profits from her calendar sales went to these charities to support their amazing and vital work.

The project was also inspired by Kintsugi, the ancient Japanese art form that uses gold in the repair of broken items. This gold highlights the object's history, making it unique and adding to the object's beauty.

Kat lovingly used gold leaf to paint the scars of her Golden Warriors, reminding them of their own strength, healing, and unique beauty.

Festival of the Girl

Kat took part in the amazing Festival of the Girl!

This virtual event, which took place on Sunday 10th October 2021, was aimed at girls aged 7-11.

The theme for the year was 'My Brilliant Body', changing girls' perceptions of their bodies and celebrating them for what they do for us, rather than how they are seen by others - redefining what girl power means in 2021.

This fitted perfectly with Kat's ethos!

Paint yourself as a Goddess Workshop

To all of you women who don't feel good enough...

To all of you women who do not feel good enough.

Not seen. Not heard.

Not slim enough. Not curvy enough.

Not pretty enough. Not funny enough.

Not wealthy enough. Not sexual enough.

Not quiet enough. Not loud enough.

Not enough.

Here is your reminder – you are enough.

Just as you are.

You are glorious.
